Mental Retardation (Down's Syndrome or Mongolism)

The Disease Is Unknown

An elderly woman of 62 have been stricken with a serious disorder that even doctors were unable to diagnose.  Her laboratory tests were all normal except that her health was in total breakdown.  Alternative treatment was also tried but she was not responding.

Iatrogenic Disease - Janet's Case

Janet is a case in point.  She was diagnosed as having Lupus after showing skin rashes and became more sensitive to the sun's exposure.  Systemic Lupus Erethematosus or SLE is an auto immune desease which involves every organ in the human body. Janet is an out patient receiving anti-malarial prescription drugs for her skin disease, joint pains and inflammation.  She then complained of dizziness and chest pain.  One day she collapsed while attending church services.  Her doctor insisted hospitalization.

The practice of Alternative Medicine can no longer be considered ' quackery' as it was before.  Luckily and interestingly, an increase number of medical doctors are embracing the alternative form of treatment.  

Courses in Naturopathy are now offered in different universities in diferrent states. Health books, medical journals and other health related publications written by medical and naturopathic doctors contain full references on the use of natural therapies.  These are available in all bookstores worldwide. 

Although alternative medicine practitioners differ in its approach to treatment but all of them spring from one theory that a healthy body will not develop disease specially cancer and that immune system dysfunction allows disease or tumor to develop.

Now, the impression that orthodox medicine alone holds all the solutions in effective healing is no longer accepted.  Its applications are often restricted to strong drug therapies and radical surgeries.  When it comes to health care, people want to know their options.  The answer is education.

The Naturopathic Philosophy

In the practice of medicine, we have two different treatment philosophies. They are the orthodox or allopathic and the alternative or the naturopathy.

Naturopathic Philosophy believes in the principles of natural healing, the power of nature, the body's ability of of self healing. It does not use harmful substances such as drugs and pharmaceauticals and it does not rely on dangerous procedures like surgery. It identifies and treats the cause of disease, not just its symptoms and promotes the role of physician as a teacher as well as a healer.

The origin of the word "doctor" comes from the Latin word "docere" meaning "to teach". A Naturopathic Practitioner teaches clients how to live a healthy, holistic life.

The Orthodox  or Allopathic philosophy holds that the disease is caused by external agents, chiefly bacteria and viruses. A cure will result when the offending agents are eliminated. Allopathic belief tends to look at the symptoms and disease as one so that when the symptom has been eliminated, it is presumed that the disease is cured.

The Naturopathic however sees a symptom as nothing more than a signal that something  is wrong. When the symptom alone is eliminated, it is most likely being suppressed. Unless the underlying cause has been eliminated, the symptom may return later in a chronic form.

I have directly observed the suffering endured by these patients simply because they are given drug therapy first and have not tried the other treatment - nutritional treatment which proved that drug therapy is unnecessary and a health risk to the life of the patient. I pity those patients whose illness continues because they have belief and trust in their doctor even when he tells them, "There's nothing else that can be done,"
